Crossing over: a bivalent of two homologous chromosomes exchanges segments between non-sister chromatids at a chiasma, producing recombinant chromatids.
Crossing over: a bivalent of two homologous chromosomes exchanges segments between non-sister chromatids at a chiasma, producing recombinant chromatids.

Crossing over = exchange of segments between non-sister chromatids of homologous chromosomes at pachytene of meiosis I, producing genetic recombination.

Definition: Crossing over is the mutual exchange of corresponding segments between the non-sister chromatids of a pair of homologous chromosomes.

The process (during Prophase I of meiosis):

  1. Leptotene: chromosomes condense and become visible as thin threads.
  2. Zygotene: homologous chromosomes come to lie side by side and pair exactly (synapsis), forming a bivalent (tetrad) joined by the synaptonemal complex.
  3. Pachytene: each homologue now has two chromatids (four in the bivalent). Crossing over occurs here — the enzyme recombinase, within recombination nodules, makes cuts in the non-sister chromatids and exchanges equal segments between them.
  4. Diplotene: the paired chromosomes begin to separate but remain joined at X-shaped points called chiasmata, the visible sites of crossing over.
  5. Diakinesis: chiasmata terminalise and the homologues prepare to separate. …
