Glycolysis splits glucose into two pyruvic acid molecules in the cytoplasm, yielding a net 2 ATP and 2 NADH.

Glycolysis (Greek: glycos = sugar, lysis = splitting), also called the EMP (Embden-Meyerhof-Parnas) pathway, is the breakdown of one molecule of glucose (6-carbon) into two molecules of pyruvic acid (3-carbon). It occurs in the cytoplasm and does not require oxygen (anaerobic), so it is common to all respiration.

Main steps:

  1. Phosphorylation: Glucose is phosphorylated by ATP to glucose-6-phosphate, which changes to fructose-6-phosphate.
  2. Fructose-6-phosphate is phosphorylated again (using a second ATP) to fructose-1,6-bisphosphate. (Thus 2 ATP are used up here.)
  3. Splitting: Fructose-1,6-bisphosphate splits into two 3-carbon molecules — glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate (PGAL) and dihydroxyacetone phosphate, which are interconvertible.
  4. Oxidation: Each PGAL is oxidised (removing hydrogen, forming NADH) and phosphorylated to 1,3-bisphosphoglyceric acid. …
