Ethane is a saturated alkane (C–C); ethene is an unsaturated alkene (C=C) that decolourises bromine water and Baeyer's reagent.

From NCERT Class 11 Chemistry (Hydrocarbons):

Ethane (C₂H₆):

  • Saturated hydrocarbon (alkane), CH₃–CH₃.
  • Contains only a C–C single bond; carbons are sp³ hybridised.
  • Does NOT decolourise bromine water or cold alkaline KMnO₄ (Baeyer's reagent).
  • Undergoes substitution reactions.

Ethylene / Ethene (C₂H₄):

  • Unsaturated hydrocarbon (alkene), CH₂=CH₂.
  • Contains a C=C double bond; carbons are sp² hybridised. …
