(a) Addition reaction: reagent adds across a C=C/C≡C bond, no atoms lost. (b) Electrophilic substitution: an electrophile replaces an H on an aromatic ring, preserving aromaticity.

(a) Addition reaction: Alkenes and alkynes, having electron-rich π bonds, readily undergo addition reactions, in which a reagent (X2, HX, H2, H2O, etc.) adds across the multiple bond, converting it into a single bond, with the two fragments of the reagent attaching to the two carbons that were doubly/triply bonded. No atoms are lost in this process — the product simply incorporates all atoms of both starting materials.

Example: hydrogenation of ethylene — CH2=CH2+H2→Ni/Pt,ΔCH3−CH3CH_2=CH_2 + H_2 \xrightarrow{Ni/Pt, \Delta} CH_3-CH_3; or bromination — CH2=CH2+Br2→CH2Br−CH2BrCH_2=CH_2 + Br_2 \rightarrow CH_2Br-CH_2Br.
