In an addition reaction a molecule adds across a multiple bond, turning an unsaturated compound into a saturated product.

From NCERT Class 11 Chemistry (Hydrocarbons):

An addition reaction is a characteristic reaction of unsaturated compounds (alkenes and alkynes). In it, the π-bond of a C=C or C≡C breaks and two atoms or groups from the reagent add to the two carbon atoms — nothing is eliminated, so the whole reagent is incorporated.

Examples:

  • Hydrogenation: CH₂=CH₂ + H₂ →(Ni) CH₃–CH₃.
  • Halogenation: CH₂=CH₂ + Br₂ → CH₂Br–CH₂Br. …
