Graham's law: rate of diffusion is inversely proportional to sqrt(density).

Statement of Graham's law of diffusion: At constant temperature and pressure, the rate of diffusion (or effusion) of a gas is inversely proportional to the square root of its density.

rate of diffusion (r) is proportional to 1/sqrt(d)

Relationship for two gases:

For two gases with rates of diffusion r1 and r2 and densities d1 and d2:

r1/r2 = sqrt(d2/d1)

Since the density of a gas is proportional to its molar mass (d proportional to M), this can also be written in terms of molar masses:

r1/r2 = sqrt(M2/M1)
