By Graham's law of diffusion, the lighter the gas, the faster it diffuses; CH₄ has the smallest molar mass of the three gases, so it diffuses fastest.

Graham's Law of Diffusion states that at constant temperature and pressure, the rate of diffusion (r) of a gas is inversely proportional to the square root of its molar mass (M):

r ∝ 1/√M, so r₁/r₂ = √(M₂/M₁)

Molar masses of the given gases:

  • N₂ : M = 28 g/mol
  • O₂ : M = 32 g/mol
  • CH₄ : M = 16 g/mol

Since rate of diffusion is inversely proportional to √M, the gas with the smallest molar mass diffuses the fastest. Comparing the three, CH₄ has the lowest molar mass (16 g/mol), lower than both N₂ (28) and O₂ (32).

Ranking of diffusion rates: r(CH₄) > r(N₂) > r(O₂), since 16 < 28 < 32.
