The rate of diffusion of a gas is inversely proportional to the square root of its density (or molar mass) at the same T and P.

Statement: Graham's law of diffusion states that, under identical conditions of temperature and pressure, the rate of diffusion (or effusion) of a gas is inversely proportional to the square root of its density.

rate of diffusion (r) proportional to 1 / sqrt(d)

Since density is directly proportional to molar mass, the law is often written in terms of molar mass (M):

r proportional to 1 / sqrt(M)

Comparing two gases under the same conditions:

r1 / r2 = sqrt(d2 / d1) = sqrt(M2 / M1)
