Step 1 - Starting material

Silicones are prepared starting from alkyl/aryl substituted chlorosilanes, e.g. R2SiCl2\text{R}_2\text{SiCl}_2 (such as dimethyldichlorosilane, R=CH3R=\text{CH}_3), obtained by reacting RCl with silicon in the presence of a copper catalyst.

Step 2 - Hydrolysis and condensation

Hydrolysis of R2SiCl2\text{R}_2\text{SiCl}_2 gives an unstable diol, which undergoes intermolecular condensation (polymerisation), eliminating water and building up long chains with a repeating −O−Si(R2)−O−Si(R2)−-\text{O}-\text{Si(R}_2)-\text{O}-\text{Si(R}_2)- backbone:

n R2SiCl2→H2On R2Si(OH)2→−nH2O(R2SiO)nn\,\text{R}_2\text{SiCl}_2 \xrightarrow{\text{H}_2\text{O}} n\,\text{R}_2\text{Si(OH)}_2 \xrightarrow{-n\text{H}_2\text{O}} (\text{R}_2\text{SiO})_n

Step 3 - Range of products and uses …
