With no net external force, total linear momentum is conserved.

The law of conservation of linear momentum states: 'If no net external force acts on a system, the total linear momentum of the system remains constant (both in magnitude and direction).'

It follows directly from Newton's laws. From the second law, F⃗ext=dp⃗dt\vec{F}_{ext} = \dfrac{d\vec{p}}{dt}; if F⃗ext=0\vec{F}_{ext} = 0 then dp⃗dt=0\dfrac{d\vec{p}}{dt} = 0, so p⃗=\vec{p} = constant.
