The last t seconds of ascent cover the same distance as the first t seconds of fall from the top: (1/2) g t^2.

The ball is thrown up with speed u; total time of ascent is T = u/g, at the end of which its velocity is zero.

A neat way to find the distance in the LAST t seconds of ascent is to use time-reversal symmetry: going up and slowing to rest looks exactly like starting from rest at the top and falling for a time t. In that reversed motion the distance fallen from rest in time t is:

s = (1/2) g t^2.

Hence the distance covered during the last t seconds of the upward journey is (1/2) g t^2.
