At half the total fall time, the body has covered only a quarter of the total height (not half), because distance under free fall grows with t2t^2, not tt.

Let the body fall from height HH and reach the ground in time TT. Using H=(1/2)gT2H = (1/2)g T^2 ... (1)

Distance fallen in time T/2T/2: h=(1/2)g(T/2)2=(1/2)g⋅T2/4=(1/4)[(1/2)gT2]=H/4h = (1/2)g(T/2)^2 = (1/2)g \cdot T^2/4 = (1/4)\left[(1/2)gT^2\right] = H/4

So after T/2T/2 seconds, the body has fallen H/4H/4 metres. Its height above the ground at that instant is:

H−H/4=3H/4H - H/4 = 3H/4
