Question 88 of 89

Q.An iron ball and a feather are both falling at the same time from a height of 20 m.

(i) Will the time taken by them to reach the ground be same or different?
(ii) Calculate the velocity of the iron ball when it reaches the ground. (Ignore air resistance. Take g = 10 ms^-2)

Ignoring air resistance, both the iron ball and the feather fall with the same acceleration g and take the same time; each reaches the ground with velocity v = square root of (2gh) = 20 m/s.

Part (i): Time taken.

When air resistance is ignored, every freely falling body — regardless of its mass, shape, or material — experiences the SAME acceleration due to gravity, g, because the gravitational force (F = mg) is exactly proportional to mass, so the acceleration a = F/m = mg/m = g is independent of mass. Since both the iron ball and the feather start from the same height (20 m) with the same initial velocity (zero, if dropped) and experience the same acceleration g, they take exactly the SAME time to reach the ground. (This is the same principle famously demonstrated by dropping a hammer and a feather together on the Moon, where there is no air resistance.)

Part (ii): Velocity of the iron ball on reaching the ground.

Using the third equation of motion for free fall starting from rest:

v^2 = u^2 + 2gh

with u = 0 (dropped from rest), g = 10 m/s^2, h = 20 m: …
