Understanding Bye Determination in Knock-Out Tournaments
In a knock-out (elimination) tournament, every team except the champion must lose exactly once. That means the total number of matches is always one less than the number of teams — because each match eliminates one team, and only one team remains undefeated at the end.
The real challenge comes when the number of teams is not a power of 2. A power of 2 (2, 4, 8, 16, 32…) creates a perfect bracket where every round has an even number of teams. When you have 22 teams, that's not a power of 2 — the next higher power is 32. The difference, 32 − 22 = 10, tells you how many byes are needed. A bye is essentially a free pass to the next round, given to certain teams so that the remaining number of competitors becomes a power of 2 after the first round.
The half distribution matters because it determines how the fixture is drawn. When N is even, both halves get the same number of teams: N/2 each. For 22 teams, that's 11 in the upper half and 11 in the lower half.
Byes are not given randomly. The standard allotment order is: last team of the lower half, first team of the upper half, last team of the upper half, first team of the lower half — and this cycle repeats until all byes are assigned.
