Biodiversity loss is caused mainly by the Evil Quartet: habitat loss and fragmentation, over-exploitation, alien species invasion, and co-extinctions.

The accelerated rates of species extinction that the world is facing are largely due to human activities. The four major causes (called 'The Evil Quartet') are:

  1. Habitat loss and fragmentation:
  • This is the most important cause of the extinction of plants and animals.

  • The most dramatic example is the destruction of tropical rain forests (e.g. the Amazon, once the 'lungs of the planet').

  • When large habitats are broken up (fragmented) into small pieces due to human activities such as agriculture, urbanisation and roads, the mammals and birds requiring large territories and animals with migratory habits are badly affected, leading to population decline.

  1. Over-exploitation:
  • When humans use natural resources far beyond the rate at which they can be replenished, over-exploitation occurs.

  • Many species (e.g. Steller's sea cow, passenger pigeon) have been driven to extinction because of over-hunting/over-harvesting by humans. Many marine fish populations are declining due to over-fishing.

  1. Alien species invasions:
  • When alien (exotic) species are introduced, either intentionally or unintentionally, into a new area, some of them become invasive and cause decline or extinction of native species. …
