The 'Evil Quartet' names the four main causes of biodiversity loss — habitat loss/fragmentation, over-exploitation, alien species invasions, and co-extinction — and biodiversity is protected either in its natural habitat (in-situ) or outside it (ex-situ).

(a) The 'Evil Quartet' of biodiversity loss consists of four causes. Two are already given in the chart — Over-exploitation and Alien species invasions — so the missing two are:

  • A = Habitat loss and fragmentation — the most important cause of biodiversity loss (e.g., destruction of tropical rainforests, or the Amazon rainforest being converted for agriculture/development, fragmenting large habitats into small isolated patches).
  • B = Co-extinction — when a species that is dependent on another species (e.g., in an obligatory relationship such as a host-specific parasite, or a plant and its unique pollinator) becomes extinct along with the extinction of the species it depends on.

(b) The two broad methods/approaches of biodiversity conservation are:

  • In-situ conservation — conserving and protecting species within their own natural habitat/ecosystem.
  • Ex-situ conservation — conserving species by removing them from their natural habitat and placing them under special protected/managed conditions elsewhere.

(c) One example each: …
