Population density = number of individuals per unit area/volume; it depends on natality, mortality, immigration and emigration.

Population density is a measure of the size of a population in a given space. It is defined as the number of individuals of a species present per unit area (for land organisms) or per unit volume (for aquatic organisms) at a given time.

Density (D) = number of individuals (N) / area or volume (S).

Sometimes density is measured not as absolute numbers but by other measures such as percentage cover or biomass, or even relative measures (e.g. number of pug marks, or fish caught per trap).

Factors on which population density depends: the density changes because of four basic processes.

  1. Natality (birth rate) — number of births; increases density.
  2. Mortality (death rate) — number of deaths; decreases density.
