Four factors change population density: natality (+), mortality (−), immigration (+) and emigration (−).

The density (size) of a population in a habitat keeps changing due to four basic processes:

  1. Natality (Birth rate): The number of births in a population during a given period. It adds new individuals to the population and increases population density.

  2. Mortality (Death rate): The number of deaths in the population during a given period. It decreases population density.

  3. Immigration: The number of individuals of the same species that come into the habitat from elsewhere during the given period. It increases population density.

  4. Emigration: The number of individuals of the population that leave the habitat and go elsewhere during the given period. It decreases population density.

Thus, if N is the population density at time t, then the density at time t+1 is:

Nt+1 = Nt + [(B + I) − (D + E)]

where B = births (natality), I = immigration, D = deaths (mortality), E = emigration.
