Contraception prevents unwanted pregnancy through natural, barrier, IUD, hormonal, surgical and emergency methods, helping population control.

Contraception refers to the deliberate prevention of pregnancy. It is important for controlling population growth and for reproductive health. The main methods are:

  1. Natural / traditional methods: These avoid the chance of the egg and sperm meeting. They include:

    • Periodic abstinence: avoiding intercourse during the fertile period (about days 10-17 of the menstrual cycle).
    • Coitus interruptus (withdrawal): withdrawal of the penis before ejaculation.
    • Lactational amenorrhoea: absence of menstruation (and ovulation) during intense breast-feeding after childbirth, up to about 6 months. These have no side effects but a high chance of failure.
  2. Barrier methods: The sperm and ovum are physically prevented from meeting using barriers such as condoms (for both males and females), diaphragms, cervical caps and vaults. They also help prevent sexually transmitted infections.

  3. Intra-Uterine Devices (IUDs): Devices inserted into the uterus by a doctor, such as non-medicated (Lippes loop), copper-releasing (Cu-T, Cu-7, Multiload 375) and hormone-releasing IUDs (LNG-20, Progestasert). They increase phagocytosis of sperms and make the uterus unsuitable for implantation. They are ideal for spacing children.

  4. Oral / hormonal methods: Hormonal preparations of progestogens (or progestogen-oestrogen combinations) taken as pills (e.g. 'Saheli'), injections or implants. They inhibit ovulation and implantation and alter the cervical mucus to retard sperm entry.
