Contraceptive (oral) pills contain progestogens or progestogen-estrogen combinations; they prevent pregnancy mainly by inhibiting ovulation.

Contraceptive pills are a hormonal method of birth control used by females.

Composition:

  • They contain either progestogens alone or a combination of progestogen and estrogen.
  • They are taken orally, usually daily for 21 days starting within the first five days of the menstrual cycle, followed by a gap.

Mode of action:

  • They inhibit ovulation, i.e. they prevent the release of the egg from the ovary by suppressing the secretion of gonadotropins (FSH and LH) from the pituitary.
  • They inhibit implantation by altering the uterine endometrium and making it unsuitable for implantation.
