In flowering plants, the pollen tube delivers two male gametes into the embryo sac, where one fertilises the egg (syngamy) and the other fuses with the polar nuclei (triple fusion) — this is double fertilisation.

Fertilisation in flowering plants (angiosperms) is preceded by pollination and involves the fusion of male and female gametes. Its unique feature is double fertilisation.

Steps:

  1. Pollination and germination of pollen: after pollination, the pollen grain lands on the stigma and germinates, producing a pollen tube. The pollen tube carries two non-motile male gametes.

  2. Growth of pollen tube: the pollen tube grows through the style and reaches the ovule, entering the embryo sac usually through the micropyle (porogamy).

  3. Entry into embryo sac: the tip of the pollen tube enters the embryo sac through one of the synergids and releases the two male gametes.

  4. Syngamy (true fertilisation): one male gamete fuses with the egg cell (oosphere). This fusion is called syngamy and forms a diploid (2n) zygote (oospore), which later develops into the embryo.
