In angiosperms, one male gamete fertilises the egg (syngamy → 2n zygote) and the other fuses with two polar nuclei (triple fusion → 3n endosperm); both together = double fertilisation.

Double fertilisation is a characteristic feature of angiosperms (flowering plants).

After pollination, the pollen tube enters the embryo sac (through one of the synergids) and releases two male gametes into it. Two fusion events then take place:

  1. Syngamy (generative/true fertilisation): One male gamete fuses with the egg cell (oosphere) to form a diploid (2n) zygote. The zygote later develops into the embryo.

  2. Triple fusion: The second male gamete fuses with the two polar nuclei (or the diploid secondary/central nucleus) present in the central cell. Since three haploid nuclei fuse, it is called triple fusion, and it forms the triploid (3n) primary endosperm nucleus (PEN). The PEN develops into the endosperm, which nourishes the developing embryo.
