(a) Artificial sweeteners = non-nutritive sweet compounds like saccharin and aspartame. (b) Essential amino acids must come from food (valine, leucine…); non-essential ones are made in the body (glycine, alanine…).

(a) Artificial sweetening agents:

These are man-made (synthetic) chemical compounds that produce a sweet taste but provide little or no food value (calories). They are used by diabetics and calorie-conscious people in place of sugar.

Examples:

  • Saccharin (about 550 times sweeter than sugar; the first artificial sweetener).
  • Aspartame (about 100 times sweeter; used in cold foods and soft drinks). (Others: sucralose, alitame.)

(b) Essential vs non-essential amino acids:

Proteins are built from about 20 alpha-amino acids. On the basis of whether the human body can make them, they are classified as:

  • Essential amino acids: These cannot be synthesised in the body and MUST be obtained from the diet. Examples: valine, leucine, isoleucine, lysine, phenylalanine, threonine. …
