A secondary (storage) cell is a rechargeable cell whose reaction can be reversed by passing current, so it can be used again and again.

Electrochemical cells are of two kinds — primary and secondary.

Secondary cell (storage cell):

  • After the cell has run down (discharged), it can be recharged by passing a direct current through it from an external source in the direction opposite to the discharging current.
  • This reverses the cell reaction and regenerates the original reactants, so the cell can be used repeatedly.
  • The electrode reactions are therefore reversible.

Examples:

  • Lead storage battery (used in automobiles): Pb anode, PbO2 cathode, H2SO4 electrolyte.
  • Nickel-cadmium (Ni-Cd) cell. …
