Wurtz reaction: 2CH3I + 2Na (dry ether) -> C2H6 + 2NaI.

Ethane can be prepared from methyl iodide by the Wurtz reaction, in which an alkyl halide is treated with sodium metal in dry ethereal solution. Two alkyl groups couple through their carbon atoms to give a higher, symmetrical alkane, and sodium halide is eliminated.

Reaction:

2CH3-I + 2Na --(dry ether)--> CH3-CH3 + 2NaI

Mechanism (in brief): sodium first forms the organosodium (CH3-Na), which then reacts with a second molecule of CH3I; the two methyl groups join to form the C-C bond of ethane.
