Wattless current is the quadrature (90°90° out-of-phase) component of AC that dissipates no average power, because the power factor cos⁡ϕ=cos⁡90°=0\cos\phi = \cos 90° = 0.

What is wattless current?

In an AC circuit the average power consumed is

P=Vrms Irmscos⁡ϕ,P = V_{rms}\,I_{rms}\cos\phi,

where ϕ\phi is the phase difference between the voltage and the current, and cos⁡ϕ\cos\phi is the power factor.

If the phase difference is exactly ϕ=90°\phi = 90° (as in a purely inductive or purely capacitive circuit), then cos⁡ϕ=cos⁡90°=0\cos\phi = \cos 90° = 0, and hence

P=Vrms Irms×0=0.P = V_{rms}\,I_{rms}\times 0 = 0.
