Wattless current is the component of AC that dissipates zero average power because current and voltage are 90∘90^\circ out of phase (cos⁡ϕ=0\cos\phi = 0).

The average power consumed in an AC circuit is

P=Vrms Irmscos⁡ϕ,P = V_{rms}\,I_{rms}\cos\phi,

where ϕ\phi is the phase difference between voltage and current and cos⁡ϕ\cos\phi is the power factor.

In a purely inductive or purely capacitive circuit the current is exactly 90∘90^\circ out of phase with the voltage, so ϕ=90∘\phi = 90^\circ and cos⁡ϕ=0\cos\phi = 0. Then

P=VrmsIrmscos⁡90∘=0.P = V_{rms}I_{rms}\cos 90^\circ = 0.
