Power factor cos⁡ϕ=R/Z=RR2+(XL−XC)2\cos\phi = R/Z = \dfrac{R}{\sqrt{R^2 + (X_L - X_C)^2}} for a series LCR circuit.

In a series LCR circuit driven by an AC source, the current and voltage differ in phase by an angle ϕ\phi. The power factor is cos⁡ϕ\cos\phi, the ratio of the resistance to the total impedance.

Impedance. The impedance of the series LCR circuit is

Z=R2+(XL−XC)2,Z = \sqrt{R^2 + (X_L - X_C)^2},

where XL=ωLX_L = \omega L (inductive reactance) and XC=1ωCX_C = \dfrac{1}{\omega C} (capacitive reactance).

Power factor. From the impedance triangle,

cos⁡ϕ=RZ=RR2+(XL−XC)2.\cos\phi = \frac{R}{Z} = \frac{R}{\sqrt{R^2 + (X_L - X_C)^2}}.
