Sky wave propagation. Radio waves in the frequency range of about 2 MHz to 30 MHz can be sent up towards the sky, where the ionosphere (an ionised layer of the upper atmosphere) reflects them back to Earth. By repeated reflection between the ionosphere and the ground, these 'sky waves' can travel very large distances beyond the horizon. This mode is used for short-wave broadcast and long-distance HF communication. Waves above ~30–40 MHz penetrate the ionosphere and are not reflected, so this mode fails at higher frequencies.
