Long-distance short-wave (HF) broadcasting relies on the ionosphere reflecting the signal back to Earth — this is sky-wave propagation.

Radio waves can propagate in three main ways:

  • Ground wave propagation — the wave travels along the surface of the earth; used for low-frequency signals (AM medium wave, up to ~2 MHz) but range is limited by ground absorption.
  • Sky wave propagation — the wave is transmitted towards the sky and gets reflected by the ionosphere (a charged layer of the upper atmosphere) back down to earth. Because the ionosphere effectively acts like a mirror at these frequencies, the wave can bounce between the ionosphere and the ground (or ocean surface) multiple times and travel very long distances, well beyond line of sight.
