Metal resistance rises with temperature (fewer effective free paths, lower mobility); semiconductor resistance falls with temperature (many more charge carriers generated).

Metallic conductor — resistance increases. A metal already has a fixed, large number of free electrons. As temperature rises, the positive ions of the lattice vibrate more vigorously, so the free electrons collide with them more frequently. This reduces the relaxation time τ\tau (and hence the drift mobility). Since resistivity ρ=mne2τ\rho = \dfrac{m}{ne^2\tau}, a smaller τ\tau makes ρ\rho (and resistance) larger. Metals thus have a positive temperature coefficient of resistance.
