Apparent dip = dip measured in a vertical plane not containing the magnetic meridian; it is always ≥ the true dip.

The true (real) angle of dip δ\delta is the angle the Earth's total magnetic field makes with the horizontal, measured when the dip circle's vertical plane coincides with the magnetic meridian.

If the dip circle is rotated so that its vertical plane makes an angle θ\theta with the magnetic meridian, the vertical component BVB_V is unchanged, but only the component of the horizontal field along the plane, BHcos⁡θB_H\cos\theta, acts. The needle now settles at an apparent angle of dip δ′\delta' given by

tan⁡δ′=BVBHcos⁡θ=tan⁡δcos⁡θ\tan\delta' = \frac{B_V}{B_H\cos\theta} = \frac{\tan\delta}{\cos\theta}
