Apparent dip = dip read when the needle's plane is at angle θ to the magnetic meridian; cot⁡δ′=cot⁡δcos⁡θ\cot\delta'=\cot\delta\cos\theta, always ≥ true dip.

When a dip circle is set with its vertical plane exactly in the magnetic meridian, the needle shows the true dip δ\delta, where tan⁡δ=BVBH\tan\delta=\dfrac{B_V}{B_H}.

If the vertical plane of the dip circle is rotated so that it makes an angle θ\theta with the magnetic meridian, the needle now responds to the full vertical component BVB_V but only to the component of the horizontal field along that plane, BHcos⁡θB_H\cos\theta. The dip it then shows is called the apparent dip δ′\delta':

tan⁡δ′=BVBHcos⁡θ⇒cot⁡δ′=cot⁡δ cos⁡θ.\tan\delta'=\frac{B_V}{B_H\cos\theta}\quad\Rightarrow\quad \cot\delta'=\cot\delta\,\cos\theta.
