Angle of dip = angle between the earth's total magnetic field (or a freely pivoted needle) and the horizontal plane.

The angle of dip (or angle of inclination), denoted δ\delta, at a given place is defined as the angle which the direction of the earth's total magnetic field makes with the horizontal at that place. Equivalently, it is the angle by which a magnetic needle, free to rotate in the vertical (magnetic meridian) plane, dips below the horizontal.
