Lorentz force is the combined electric + magnetic force on a moving charge: F⃗=q(E⃗+v⃗×B⃗)\vec{F} = q(\vec{E} + \vec{v}\times\vec{B}).

Definition. When a charge qq moves with velocity v⃗\vec{v} through a region containing both an electric field E⃗\vec{E} and a magnetic field B⃗\vec{B}, it experiences a total force called the Lorentz force:

F⃗=qE⃗+q(v⃗×B⃗)=q(E⃗+v⃗×B⃗).\vec{F} = q\vec{E} + q(\vec{v}\times\vec{B}) = q(\vec{E} + \vec{v}\times\vec{B}).

Two parts:

  • Electric part qE⃗q\vec{E}: acts along (or opposite to) E⃗\vec{E}, whether or not the charge moves.
  • Magnetic part q(v⃗×B⃗)q(\vec{v}\times\vec{B}): acts only on a moving charge, is perpendicular to both v⃗\vec{v} and B⃗\vec{B}, and has magnitude qvBsin⁡θqvB\sin\theta where θ\theta is the angle between v⃗\vec{v} and B⃗\vec{B}. …
