Carbon dating finds the age of dead organic material by measuring how much of its radioactive 14C^{14}C remains and applying the radioactive decay law with the half-life of 14C^{14}C (≈5730 years).

Principle: The radioactive isotope carbon-14 (614C^{14}_6C) is continuously produced in the upper atmosphere by cosmic rays and mixes with ordinary carbon. A fixed, constant proportion of 14C^{14}C exists in all living things because they keep exchanging carbon with the environment (through respiration and food).

When an organism dies, it stops taking in carbon, so its 14C^{14}C is no longer replenished and begins to decay with a half-life of about 5730 years:

614C→ 714N+ −10e+νˉ.^{14}_6C \rightarrow\ ^{14}_7N + \ ^{0}_{-1}e + \bar{\nu}.

Method: By measuring the present activity (or 14C^{14}C fraction) NN of the sample and comparing it with the activity N0N_0 of a living sample, the age tt is found from the decay law: …
