The exponential decay law is N = N0 e^(-lambda*t); putting N = N0/2 shows the half-life equals ln2/lambda = 0.693/lambda.

Exponential law of radioactive decay: The rate of disintegration is proportional to the number of undecayed nuclei present, dN/dt = -lambdaN, where lambda is the decay constant. Integrating gives N = N0 e^(-lambdat),

where N0 = number of radioactive nuclei at t = 0 and N = number remaining after time t. Thus the population of undecayed nuclei falls off exponentially with time.

Relation between half-life and decay constant: The half-life T(1/2) is the time in which half the nuclei decay, i.e. N = N0/2 at t = T(1/2). Substituting:
