Dispersion = separation of white light into its colours by a prism, because refractive index depends on wavelength.

When a beam of white light passes through a prism, it splits into a band of seven colours — VIBGYOR (violet, indigo, blue, green, yellow, orange, red). This phenomenon of splitting of white light into its component colours is called dispersion of light.

Cause: The refractive index of the prism material depends on the wavelength of light (nn is larger for shorter wavelengths). Hence different colours are refracted (bent) by different amounts:

  • Violet light (shortest λ\lambda) has the largest nn and is bent the most.
