Refractive index falls with increasing wavelength — n is highest for violet light and lowest for red light.

Dependence. For a given transparent medium, the refractive index is not the same for all colours of light; it depends on the wavelength (colour) of the light passing through it.

Rule: as the wavelength λ increases, the refractive index n decreases.

  • Violet light (shortest wavelength) → highest refractive index → bends most.
  • Red light (longest wavelength) → lowest refractive index → bends least.

Cauchy's empirical relation:

n=A+Bλ2+…n = A + \frac{B}{\lambda^2} + \dots

where A and B are constants for the medium. Since λ appears in the denominator, a larger λ gives a smaller n.
