NAND = AND followed by NOT: Y=A⋅B‾Y = \overline{A\cdot B}; output low only when both inputs are high.

A NAND gate (Not-AND) is a combination of an AND gate followed by a NOT gate. For two inputs AA and BB the Boolean output is

Y=A⋅B‾Y = \overline{A \cdot B}

In words, the gate first performs the AND operation and then inverts (complements) the result.

Truth table (2-input NAND):

ABA·BY = A⋅B‾\overline{A\cdot B}
0001
0101
1001
1110

So the output YY is 0 only when both inputs are 1, and is 1 for every other input combination. …
