NAND = AND + NOT; its output is the inverse of AND. Output is 0 only when both inputs are 1, else 1 — the exact opposite of AND.

NAND gate:

The NAND (NOT-AND) gate performs the AND operation and then inverts the result: Y=A⋅B‾Y = \overline{A\cdot B}.

Truth table of NAND gate:

ABAND (A⋅BA\cdot B)NAND (A⋅B‾\overline{A\cdot B})
0001
0101
1001
1110

How it differs from an AND gate:

  • An AND gate gives output Y=A⋅BY = A\cdot B: it outputs 1 only when both inputs are 1, and 0 in all other cases.
  • A NAND gate gives output Y=A⋅B‾Y = \overline{A\cdot B}: it outputs 0 only when both inputs are 1, and 1 in all other cases. …
