A solar cell is a p-n junction that converts light into electricity by the photovoltaic effect — light generates e–h pairs that the junction field separates.

A solar cell (photovoltaic cell) is a semiconductor device that directly converts solar (light) energy into electrical energy. It is basically a p-n junction with a large surface area exposed to light, made of materials like silicon.

Working (photovoltaic effect):

  1. Light (photons of energy greater than the band gap) falls on the junction and is absorbed near the depletion region.
  2. This generates electron–hole pairs close to the junction.
  3. The built-in electric field of the depletion region separates these charges — electrons are swept to the n-side and holes to the p-side.
  4. This accumulation of charge creates a potential difference (photo-emf) across the cell. When an external load is connected, a current flows through it. …
