LEDs convert electrical energy directly into light via electron-hole recombination; the photon energy (and hence wavelength) emitted is set by the material's band gap.

Light Emitting Diode (LED): An LED is a heavily doped p-n junction diode which, when forward biased, emits spontaneous radiation (visible or near-visible light). Under forward bias, electrons from the n-side and holes from the p-side are injected across the junction and recombine near it; each recombination releases energy approximately equal to the semiconductor's band gap, emitted as a photon of light.

Factor controlling wavelength: The band gap energy EgE_g of the semiconductor material controls the wavelength of light emitted. Since the emitted photon's energy is approximately equal to EgE_g:

Eg=hcλ⇒λ=hcEgE_g = \dfrac{hc}{\lambda} \quad\Rightarrow\quad \lambda = \dfrac{hc}{E_g}

A larger band gap gives a shorter (higher-energy) wavelength, e.g. GaAs (Eg≈1.4 eVE_g\approx1.4\text{ eV}) emits infrared, while wider-band-gap compounds emit visible red/green light. This is why the LED's material is chosen based on the desired colour.
