An LED is a forward-biased, heavily-doped p–n junction diode that emits light on recombination of electrons and holes. It is used in indicator lamps and digital displays.

What is a light-emitting diode (LED)?

A light-emitting diode is a specially-designed, heavily-doped p–n junction diode that emits light when it is forward biased. Under forward bias, electrons from the n-side and holes from the p-side are pushed toward the junction, where they recombine. Each recombination releases energy equal to the band gap EgE_g of the semiconductor, and this energy is emitted as a photon of light of frequency ν\nu given by hν≈Egh\nu \approx E_g.

The colour of the emitted light depends on the band gap of the semiconductor material (e.g. GaAs, GaAsP, GaP for infra-red/red/green). LEDs work at low voltage and current, have long life, fast switching, and high efficiency.
