Malus's law gives the intensity of polarised light after an analyser: I=I0cos⁡2θI = I_0\cos^2\theta, where θ\theta is the angle between the light's plane of polarisation and the analyser's axis.

When plane-polarised light of amplitude E0E_0 (intensity I0∝E02I_0 \propto E_0^2) is incident on an analyser (a polaroid) whose transmission axis is at an angle θ\theta to the plane of polarisation of the incident light, only the component of the electric field along the analyser's axis is transmitted.

Step 1 — resolve the amplitude. The component of the electric field along the analyser axis is E0cos⁡θE_0\cos\theta.

Step 2 — intensity is proportional to amplitude squared. Hence the transmitted intensity is

I=I0cos⁡2θ.I = I_0\cos^2\theta.
