Malus's law gives the intensity of polarised light after passing through an analyser: I = I₀cos²θ.

Malus's Law:

When a beam of plane-polarised light of intensity I0I_0 is incident on an analyser (a second polaroid/polariser), the intensity I of the light transmitted through the analyser is given by:

I=I0cos⁡2θI = I_0\cos^2\theta

where θ is the angle between the plane of transmission (polarisation axis) of the polariser and that of the analyser. When θ = 0°, I = I₀ (maximum transmission); when θ = 90° (crossed polarisers), I = 0 (no light passes through).
