The Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve is named after the mountain that dominates it — Nanda Devi, the second-highest peak in India. The reserve lies in the state of Uttarakhand, spread across the Chamoli, Bageshwar, and Pithoragarh districts of the Garhwal and Kumaon regions. It is not just a single protected area but a complex of two core zones: the Nanda Devi National Park and the Valley of Flowers National Park, both of which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

The reserve was established in 1988 under UNESCO’s Man and the Biosphere Programme, making it one of India’s earliest biosphere reserves. Its high-altitude terrain, ranging from about 1,800 metres to over 7,800 metres, shelters rare species such as the snow leopard, Himalayan musk deer, and the blue sheep. The Valley of Flowers, famous for its alpine meadows, lies within the reserve’s core zone and adds to its ecological significance.
