Once we have thought about which kinds of social differences are acceptable and which are not, the next question is what we are actually trying to achieve when we pursue equality. Different thinkers and ideologies, looking at the many kinds of inequality that exist in society, have identified three broad and closely linked dimensions along which equality needs to be pursued: political equality, social equality and economic equality.
