A balanced debate should weigh the case that early, informed participation builds essential citizenship skills against the case that school-level "politics" risks importing the very manipulation and self-interest that gives politics its bad name -- and should distinguish constructive participation from partisan politicking.

Arguments in favour of students participating in politics draw directly on why political theory itself is said to matter: students will all become voting citizens sooner or later, and acting responsibly as a citizen requires developing the habit of being informed and engaged well before that first vote is actually cast.
