Q.What are the various components of a mode of production?

Marx's concept of a mode of production has two components, and understanding both is necessary to understand the concept fully. The first component is the productive forces: these are all the actual means and factors that go into material production, including land, labour, technology, and sources of energy (in a modern economy, things like coal, petroleum or electricity; in a primitive economy, simple tools and natural resources). The second component is the relations of production: these are the economic relationships and forms of labour organisation through which production is actually carried out -- and because these relations are defined above all by who owns or controls the productive forces, they are also, in effect, property relations. Together, the productive forces and the relations of production make up what Marx calls the economic base of a society. On top of this economic base, Marx argues, rests a superstructure of social, cultural and political institutions -- religion, law, art, literature and the various beliefs and ideas that circulate in a given era -- which are shaped by, and ultimately traceable back to, the underlying economic base rather than existing independently of it. Marx's own example of primitive communism makes this concrete: its productive forces were mostly natural resources (forests, land, animals) worked with rudimentary technology such as stone tools, while its relations of production rested on community property, since private property did not yet exist, organised through collective, tribal forms of hunting and gathering.

[!ANSWER]

A mode of production consists of the productive forces (land, labour, technology, energy) and the relations of production (the ownership/property relations and forms of labour organisation governing how production is carried out) -- together forming the economic base, on which the superstructure of law, religion, politics and ideas rests.
